Trio of Colonials recognized after regular season finale
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- GW swimming and diving picked up a trio of Atlantic 10 weekly awards on Tuesday with Peter Nachtwey, Isabela Patino and James Torrez honored for their efforts in the regular season finale at Virginia Tech.
Nachtwey claimed Men's Co-Performer of the Week honors after an excellent day of diving against tough competition, while Patino and Torres garnered Rookie of the Week honors. It was the third time this season the Colonials have earned at least three awards after a weekend of competition.
Nachtwey shared his award with George Mason's Ryan Donnelly after leading the Colonials on the diving boards with a third-place finish in the 3-meter competition (326.10) and a fifth-place showing on 1-meter (265.70). It was the second time this season the Chagrin Falls, Ohio, native was honored by the conference after previously winning the award on Nov. 13.
Patino recorded a pair of career-best efforts last Saturday to earn her third A-10 weekly honor in as many competitions. This time, the California native shared the award with Richmond's Maggie Purcell.
Facing the host Hokies, Cincinnati and James Madison, Patino earned a win in the 200-yard butterfly (2:04.36) and a runner-up finish in the 100-yard butterfly (56.25 seconds). She also competed in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.51) and 400-yard medley relay (4:00.60) in the meet.
Torrez put together a strong meet in GW's final tune-up for the A-10 Championships, highlighted by a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.77.
The first-year from California also competed in the 100-yard butterfly (51.56) and 400-yard medley relay (3:27.78) on the way to earning the first conference honor of his career.
Now, GW begins the countdown to the conference meet, which will be held Feb. 20-23 at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
