Trio of Colonials honored after sweep of Georgetown and American
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Tommi Wolst, Gemma Atherley and Isabela Patino of GW swimming and diving were recognized by the Atlantic 10 on Tuesday after helping the Colonials defend the District last weekend with sweeps of Georgetown and American.
Atherley and Wolst were named Performers of the Week, while Patino claimed Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Wolst posted individual wins in the 100-yard breaststroke (:57.85) and 200-yard individual medley (1:52.98), plus a runner-up finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:07.71). The senior from Germany was also part of a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, completing the breaststroke leg as GW won in 1:32.96.
Wolst is the fifth different Colonial to be named Men's Performer of the Week this season. It was the third time in his career winning the award after being honored twice last season.
Atherley won all three of her swims in the meet, setting a pair of McCarthy Pool records in the process. The junior from the Channel Islands set a new pool mark en route to victory in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.87) and helped the Colonials drop another one with a blazing opening leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.40). She also touched first in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.63.
It was Atherley's second Women's Performer of the Week honor of the season and the third of her career.
Patino picked up a pair of individual victories Saturday, including a career-best swim in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.87). The first-year from California also won the 100-yard butterfly (57.06 seconds) and finished fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.59), in addition to competing in the 200-yard medley relay.
It was the second straight award win for Patino, who was also recognized after GW's dual-meet win over Richmond to close the fall schedule on Nov. 30.
As they continue to prepare for the A-10 Championships, the Colonials are back in action on Saturday at Virginia Tech, facing off against the host Hokies, Cincinnati and James Madison.
