Eight Colonials in action at 5K race
For the second straight year, George Washington swimming and diving is set to open its season at the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Open Water National Championship.
Eight Colonials will swim in the unique event hosted by Kansas and held at Lone Star Lake in Lawrence, Kan. The 5K race consists of two loops around a marked course.
GW's Moritz Fath, Emils Pone, Josh Legge and DH Hwang are set to compete in the men's race, while Gemma Atherley, Tali Lemcoff, Erin McCarthy and Andrea Moussier will represent the Colonials on the women's side. In all, 39 teams representing 29 schools are signed up to participate.
RETURN TO LONE STAR LAKE: In 2017, GW placed third on the men's side and sixth among women's squads at CSCAA Open Water Nationals.
Fath – the reigning Atlantic 10 champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle – was the Buff and Blue's top individual finisher at last year's event with a third-place showing in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 4.69 seconds. Pone placed 13th in 1:04:19.67.
Atherley led GW in the women's race, finishing 12th in 1:06:30.21.
BUFF & BLUE DEBUT: First-years Legge, Hwang, McCarthy and Moussier are set to make their collegiate debuts in the event.
COMING UP: GW's first traditional competition of the 2018-19 season is the FIU Fall Classic, which begins Oct. 5 in North Miami, Fla.
