Colonials victorious in foreign tour opener
MADRID - After a morning spent exploring Madrid with a scavenger hunt around its Parque del Buen Retiro, the George Washington women's basketball team kept the exploration going Wednesday evening with its first of four exhibitions in Spain.
The defending Atlantic 10 champion Colonials claimed a 63-58 win over local club CD CREF at Centro Sportivo in their first chance to showcase four first-years and three transfer additions ahead of the 2018-19 season. Sydney Zambrotta led the way in her debut in Buff and Blue, scoring 13 of her 19 points after halftime to help her squad earn a comeback victory.
Playing in front of program all-time great Elisa Aguilar who hails from and still lives in Madrid, GW used a big third quarter to start the trip on a winning note. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the early going, the Colonials picked up momentum late in the first half and continued it out of the break with a 14-4 run to take the lead.
Zambrotta's 3-pointer put GW on top 39-36 with 3:15 left in the third quarter, and the Colonials never trailed again. They closed out the victory boosted by first-year guard Maddie Loder, who scored all six of her points in the final stanza, highlighted by a nifty spin and layup in transition.
Ten Colonials scored in all, including six newcomers. A transfer from Louisville who will be eligible to play in regular season games for the 2019-2020 season per NCAA rules, Zambrotta hit three of five three-point attempts on the way to her team-leading total. Sophomore guard/forward Chyna Latimer pitched in nine points and five rebounds, while first-year forward Mayowa Taiwo added six points and four rebounds.
GW has three more exhibitions left on this foreign tour with the next coming Saturday in Valencia against the Valencia All-Stars. The Colonials then move on to Barcelona where they'll play twice against Slovenian club ZKK Celje before returning to Foggy Bottom on Aug. 23.
