Gustav Hokfelt led eight George Washington swimming and diving student-athletes who earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honors Tuesday.
The Sweden native landed a spot on the first team after a standout senior season in the pool and the classroom, while Gemma Atherley, Moritz Fath, Max Forstenhaeusler, Peter Nachtwey, Emils Pone, Tommi Wolst and Emily Zhang were honorable mention selections.
First-team honorees had to achieve a GPA of 3.50 or higher and participate at the NCAA Championships. The honorable mention picks satisfied the GPA requirement and recorded an NCAA B-cut time or competed at an NCAA regional qualifying meet. It's the third straight season the Colonials have been represented on the first team following back-to-back appearances by Andrea Bolognesi.
Hokfelt won seven gold medals at the A-10 Championship as a senior to lead the Colonials to their second straight championship and garner Most Outstanding Performer honors. He then advanced to his first NCAA Championship, where he turned in a record-breaking swim in the 100 back to finish 18th in the nation. He was named GW's Male Athlete of the Year and J. Dallas Shirley Outstanding Senior Male Student-Athlete before graduating last month with a degree in Public Health.
Atherley earned four medals, including a pair of golds, at the A-10 Championship. A native of Jersey in the Channel Islands, she posted an NCAA B-cut time of 1:58.24 in the 200 back to set a program record and later produced two more career-best times at the season-ending CSCAA National Invitational Championship.
Fath claimed A-10 gold in the 1,650 free before breaking the program record en route to silver in the 200 free. The sophomore from Germany also picked up bronze in the 500 free and a pair of relay golds. He was also selected A-10 Academic All-Conference.
Forstenhaeusler totaled five medals â€" two individual, three relay â€" at the A-10 Championship, including a pair of relay golds and two NCAA B-cut performances. The sophomore from Germany closed his season by winning four more medals at the CSCAA National Invitational.
Nachtwey had a spectacular freshman season on the diving boards. The Ohio native won a program-record four A-10 Rookie of the Week awards during the regular season before claiming silver on both the 1- and 3-meter boards at the conference championship. He finished his debut campaign at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships.
Pone claimed his first A-10 individual gold in the 400 IM in 3:52.84 and later produced another NCAA B-cut time in the 200 back. The sophomore from Lavia was also part of relay wins at both the conference met and CSCAA National Invitational Championship. He was honored on the A-10 Academic All-Conference Team and posted a perfect 4.0 GPA during the semester.
Wolst shined in his first season in Buff and Blue, earning two individual medals and three relay golds at the A-10 Championship. The junior majoring in International Business posted NCAA B-cut times in all three of his individual events at the conference meet. He ranks among the program's all-time top 10 in six different events.
Zhang was named GW's MVP on the women's side after garnering six medals, including a pair of golds, at the A-10 Championship. The junior majoring in International Affairs closed her season by earning three medals at the CSCAA National Invitational Championship. She set three individual program records and four relay marks during the season.
