WASHINGTON - A day after Carter Day and Chris Shaffer of George Washington men's track and field were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District First Team, the pair picked up additional accolades on Wednesday when the duo was named to the A-10 Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic team.
Shaffer earned his second selection to the 13-member CoSIDA District 2 squad, while Day was recognized for the first time. Both recent graduates are now under consideration for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. The Atlantic 10 accolades marked the sixth career All-Conference Academic nod for Shaffer, having previously been honored in cross country, indoor track (twice) and outdoor track (twice). For Day, he completes the 2017-18 trifecta having previously been recognized on the A-10 Cross Country and Indoor Track All-Academic teams this season.
The senior pair was joined in the A-10 spotlight on Wednesday by women's track student-athlete Kathryn Nohilly, who was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. The first-year student-athlete from Golden Bridge, N.Y. placed 12th in the conference in a time of 11:08.65 in her collegiate debut in the steeplechase at the A-10 Championships at George Mason earlier this month.
Day put together a historic senior season, closing his spring last Friday by competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA East Preliminary Round. He and teammate Matt Lange became the first Colonials to advance to the national meet.
A native of Canada, Day claimed Atlantic 10 titles in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and 5,000 meters outdoors, following up wins in the 3,000 meters and distance relay medley at the indoor conference meet. He holds program records in all three events.
In the classroom, Day has been just as excellent, compiling a 3.87 GPA en route to a degree as a double major in Geography and Environmental Studies with a minor in Geographic Information Science.
Shaffer is the GW record holder in the indoor mile and 800 and 1,500 meters outdoors. The senior from Florida closed his career in Buff and Blue this spring, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters at the A-10 Championship. He earned gold indoors in February as part of the distance relay medley.
Earlier this month, Shaffer graduated with a 3.95 GPA, earning a Systems Engineering degree with a minor in Business Administration. He was honored as the athletic department's Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year for those efforts.
Shaffer was previously recognized by CoSIDA on its All-District Track/Cross Country Team in 2016.
