
Women's Water Polo Closes CWPA Weekend with Win

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - George Washington women's water polo held Saint Francis (Pa.) scoreless into the fourth quarter in a 10-1 win Sunday afternoon to finish its opening weekend of Collegiate Water Polo Association play.
The Colonials went 1-3 against conference competition over two days at Harvard's Blodgett Pool with the losses coming to No. 9 Michigan, No. 12 Hartwick and No. 13 Indiana.Alana Ponce paced GW (11-11, 1-3) on the weekend with a combined eight goals, while Ally Jochim scored seven times. Grace Heck and Dara Bleiberg tallied four scores apiece.
The Colonials wrap up CWPA play next weekend with four games over two days at Princeton with the conference championship at Bucknell coming after that.
GW 10, Saint Francis 1: The Colonials put together a brilliant defensive effort to take down the Red Flash for the third time this season. It was the fewest goals allowed by the program since a 14-1 victory over La Verne on March 17, 2010.
GW led 5-0 at halftime and increased the advantage to 10-0 on Maddie Goodell's goal early in the final quarter. Saint Francis didn't find the net until the game's final minute.
Samantha Runyon made a career-high 11 saves in the victory, while Jaleh Moaddeli grabbed a team-high four steals.
Offensively, Goodell and Bywater netted two goals apiece with Ponce, Jochim, Moaddeli, Bleiberg, Scarlett Hallahan and Kira Bruno also scoring.
No. 13 Indiana 9, GW 5: The Colonials hung tough in a low-scoring battle, but the Hoosiers found separation down the stretch to win Sunday's opener.
GW held Indiana scoreless in the second quarter, tying it at 3 on Heck's goal with 6:54 left in the opening half. The score started there into the halftime break before the Hoosiers took the lead for good with a 3-0 advantage in the third quarter.
Heck scored twice with Jochim, Bleiberg and Hallahan also finding the net.
No. 9 Michigan 20, GW 9: The Colonials answered a quick with four-goal deficit to get within 5-3 late in the first quarter, but they couldn't keep up with the Wolverines in their Saturday nightcap.
Ponce led GW with three goals, while Jochim scored twice against Michigan.
No. 12 Hartwick 20, GW 10: The Hawks scored seven of the first eight goals to down the Colonials in their CWPA opener.
After trailing by six goals in the opening period, GW found its offensive stride, highlighted by four goals from Ponce and three from Jochim. Heck, Bleiberg and Allison DeCicco scored, as well.
