Women's Water Polo Opens CWPA Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. - George Washington women's water polo opened the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship on Friday afternoon, dropping a 13-9 decision to third-seeded Hartwick at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
Senior Scarlett Hallahan scored three times to pace the sixth-seeded Colonials, who are set to face No. 7 seed Brown on Saturday at noon in a consolation semifinal.
GW (13-14) fell behind 4-0 and spent the rest of the game chasing the Hawks, who are ranked No. 13 nationally. The Colonials battled back within 7-4 on Hallahan's power-play goal with 1:48 remaining in the opening half.Hartwick (29-10) answered with the final goal of the period and the first four out of the break to push their advantage to 12-4 on Katie McKenty's score with 17 seconds left in the third quarter. GW trimmed the deficit with a 4-1 advantage in the final quarter but never got closer than the final margin.
Freshman Grace Heck put together an impressive all-around performance for the Colonials with a goal, two assists and a team-high five steals, while senior Jacqueline Bywater contributed two goals and two steals.
Alana Ponce (one goal, one assist), Maggie Ball (one goal, two steals) and Jaleh Moaddeli (one goal, four steals) also found the net for the Buff and Blue.
UP NEXT: GW will now face Brown, which fell to No. 2 seed Michigan, 16-4, earlier Friday. The winner between the Colonials and Bears will advance to Sunday's fifth-place game, while the loser will play later Saturday trying to earn a spot in the seventh-place game.
