BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington freshman Alana Ponce has been named to the All-Collegiate Water Polo Association Division I Second Team.
Ponce has made an immediate impact, leading the Colonials in goals (59) and points (84) during a 13-win regular season. The Gig Harbor, Wash., native is tied for sixth on the program's single-season goals list, heading into the CWPA Championship.
This season, Ponce also ranks third on GW in assists (25) and steals (39). The rookie utility has converted a team-best 47.2 percent of her shot attempts and totaled six field blocks and 25 ejections drawn, as well.
"We're really proud of Alana getting this honor," head coach Barry King said. "I think it's a testament to the balance of our team that has lifted her up and allowed her to earn this kind of recognition. We're looking forward to more contributions like that moving forward."
Ponce's highlights included an eight-goal performance in a win over Gannon on Feb. 10 to tie the program's single-game record and later earn CWPA Player of the Week honors. She also won three conference Rookie of the Week awards.
Ponce is the first Colonial to earn All-CWPA recognition since Jacqueline Bywater (Second Team) and Scarlett Hallahan (Honorable Mention) in 2015.
Ponce's consistent production helped GW earn the No. 6 seed for the CWPA Championship and move within reach of its first winning season since 2004. The Colonials are set to open the tournament Friday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium, facing third-seeded Hartwick at 3 p.m.
