RIVERSIDE, Calif. - George Washington women's water polo continued its West Coast stay on Saturday with a doubleheader split at the Lancer Joust.
The Colonials started with a 10-4 win over Concordia (Calif.) before falling to No. 24 California Baptist, 8-7, in a tight contest at Lancer Aquatic Center.Scarlett Hallahan totaled six goals on the day to pace GW, which now sits at 7-5 on the season.
GW 10, Concordia 4: Samantha Runyon made five saves, helping the Colonials clamp down on the Eagles.
GW pulled away on the strength of a defense that ceded just one goal through the first three quarters. The four total goals were the fewest the Colonials have allowed this season.
Jacqueline Bywater grabbed a team-high four steals to aid the stifling effort against Concordia (5-6), while Jaleh Moaddeli added two steals and two field blocks.
GW started slow offensively before eventually finding its stride. The game was tied at 1 before the Colonials netted three goals in the final two minutes of the first half, two of them courtesy Hallahan. The lead reached 8-1 on Dara Bleiberg's goal in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.
Hallahan paced the offensive attack with three goals and three assists. Freshman Alana Ponce tallied two goals and an assist, while classmate Grace Heck added a goal and two helpers.
No. 24 California Baptist 8, GW 7: The Colonials erased a two-goal deficit in the final quarter to tie the Lancers but ultimately couldn't pull out the road victory over a ranked opponent.
Down 7-5 in the closing minutes, GW fired back with goals from Hallahan and Bleiberg. California Baptist (12-9) had an answer, though. Kira O'Donnell's score with 2:23 left put the Lancers back in front and turned out to be the final goal of the game.
Ally Jochim scored a season-high three goals and added an assist, and Hallahan also found the net three times.
Katherine Moeller made seven stops in net for the Colonials.
