Women's Swimming & Diving Takes Second at Fall Frenzy

Jackie Torrez posted another win Sunday
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jackie Torrez put together difficult back-to-back swims, including a win in the 200-yard butterfly, on Sunday to help George Washington women's swimming and diving clinch a second-place finish at the Queens University Fall Frenzy.
Torrez took fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:19.48 before coming right back to pick up her second individual victory in as many days. The junior from California, who holds the program record in the event, used a strong closing kick to finish in 2:01.45.
The Colonials earned 1,750.5 points over three days at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, landing solidly in second-place behind the host Royals (2,357.5), who have won four straight Division II national titles.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Andrea Moussier produced an excellent swim to finish second in the 1,650-yard freestyle. The first-year from Mexico's time of 16:57.23 ranks No. 4 on the program's all-time top 10. She was followed in the event by Tali Lemcoff (eighth), Lucy Castro (ninth) and Erin McCarthy (10th).
- Emily Zhang was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.69 seconds. Sydney Melnick (10th), Grace Olivardia (11th), Lynn Zhang (15th) and Caroline Racke made the B final, while Rebecca Smolcic won the C final (17th) with Patricia Cerri-Droz (19th) and Marissa Brannan (24th) just behind.
- GW placed three teams among the top nine in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The top group finished second with Zhang, Smolcic, Melnick and Gemma Atherley touching in 3:24.14.
- Atherley paced the seven Buff and Blue scorers in the 200-yard backstroke, taking fourth in 2:00.11. Meghan Burton (fifth, 2:02.72) was just behind in the A final, while Moussier (10th), Castro (16th), Isabel Berdecio (18th), Josie Teat (21st) and Erin McCarthy (23rd).
- Courtney Sicinski won the B final of the 200 breast with Ann Juneau (15th) and Courtney Coghill (24th) also scoring.
- Torrez paced four scorers in the 200 fly with Andrea Ho (eighth) also in the A final and Isabela Patino (10th) and Castro (16th) earning spots in the B final.
UP NEXT: GW is back in its home pool to close its fall schedule with a two-day meet against Atlantic 10 foe Richmond, which runs Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
