Colonials cruised to a home non-conference win Friday
WASHINGTON – George Washington men's water polo stepped out of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference play Friday to secure a 21-5 win over Austin College in its home pool at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Atakan Destici posted five goals and three assists to pace the 19th-ranked Colonials, who improved to 14-5 for the season.
GW scored the first eight goals and extended the advantage to double digits shortly after halftime en route to the comfortable victory over the Kangaroos, who are in their first season as a varsity program.
Ten different Colonials recorded goals Friday in a balanced offensive effort. Jack Kerwin scored three times for the Buff and Blue, and Josh Yardley posted two goals and two assists. Andras Levai, Zach Slaughter, Isher Gill and Nicholas Polydefkis netted two goals apiece in the victory.
Defensively, GW was just as strong. The Colonials recorded 18 steals against Austin College, led by three from Zachary Pendolino. Austin Pyrch (four saves) and Matt Taylor (13 saves) combined to shut down the Kangaroos.
UP NEXT: GW closes the weekend on Sunday, hosting Connecticut College for a 6 p.m. start.
