Men's Soccer Drops Home Opener
9/5/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Colonials (1-3) went ahead in the 70th minute on the freshman from England's breakaway goal from Drini Redzepi, but the Tribe (2-1-1) hit back with scores from William Eskay and Ryder Bell in the final 17 minutes to spoil GW's home opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 70th Minute -- Both teams had a handful of promising chances before GW finally broke through. Redzepi threaded a beautiful pass to Haynes Brown, who took a touch around the goalkeeper and fired a shot into the open net. (GW 1, William & Mary 0)
- 74th Minute -- William & Mary quickly found the equalizer with Eskay pounding home Marcel Berry's cross from close range. (GW 1, William & Mary 1)
- 82nd Minute -- The Tribe converted GW's turnover into the go-ahead goal. Antonio Bustamante picked off a pass and found Bell with space near the top of the 18-yard box. The junior forward managed to get off his shot just before the defense recovered.
- The match ended with GW pressuring William & Mary's end, but the Colonials did not attempt a shot after the Tribe took the lead.
- Haynes Brown made his collegiate debut last Friday at St. Francis Brooklyn. The forward came off the bench again Tuesday and boosted the GW offense.
- It was the first career point for Redzepi in his 14th career appearance.
- Thor Arne Höfs made four saves for GW, while William & Mary's Phil Breno stopped three shots.
- It was GW's first loss at home since Oct. 21, 2015, against St. Bonaventure. The Colonials had been 5-0-4 in their past nine matches at GW Soccer Field.
