Men's Soccer Surges Back to Drop Navy
9/13/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Colonials (2-3) trailed Navy (1-4) before the freshmen found the net in quick succession in the 73rd minute. Haynes Brown scored first off a long ball from Christian Lawal. Then, O'Connor raced down and drew a foul in the box before converting the penalty kick.
Dylan Lightbourn added an 85th-minute goal to pad the GW advantage and cap a thrilling second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 13th Minute -- Navy put GW in an early hole. Daniel Zaremba found room on the right flank, streaked toward net and blasted a close-range shot under the crossbar for his second goal of the season. (Navy 1, GW 0)
- 73rd Minute -- After pressing hard for the equalizer, the Colonials got it from Haynes Brown. The freshman from England chased down a high-arching pass from Lawal, shook off a defender near the end line and powered in a shot from a tough angle. (GW 1, Navy 1)
- 73rd Minute -- GW quickly pushed the ball back toward Navy's net where O'Connor got tangled up with a defender near the end line. The freshman from nearby Baltimore stepped up to take the ensuing penalty kick and ripped a low drive past the diving keeper. (GW 2, Navy 1)
- 85th Minute -- Lightbourn put it out of reach with his second goal of the season. The junior forward took a pass from Haynes Brown, stepped around a defender and deftly slotted his shot inside the far post. (GW 3, Navy 1)
NOTEWORTHY:
- Thor Arne Höfs made six saves in the victory. His best stop came with GW up 2-1 in the 79th minute. The GW goalkeeper dove to his right and punched a shot from Aubrey Jones over the bar to protect the lead.
- After managing just one shot in the first half, GW attempted 10 over the final 45 minutes. The Colonials turned three of their five shots on frame into goals.
- All six of GW's goals this season have come in the second half.
- Haynes Brown made the most of his first career start with his second goal in as many games and first career assist. Although he didn't play in the first two games of the season, he's recorded a team-best five points.
- Lawal picked up his first point of the season with his assist on the Haynes Brown goal. It was the 26th point of his career, most among current Colonials.
- It's the second straight season GW has earned a win over Navy. The Colonials have evened the all-time series at 12-12-4.
