The George Washington men's rowing team was joined by the family and friends of the late Nick Upton to dedicate a racing shell in his honor prior to last weekend's GW Invitational on the Potomac River.
The shell has been in action for the entirety of the spring season, operating as the primary Varsity 8 boat, before being officially dedicated in true nautical fashion with a christening. Nick's father poured Johnny Walker Black over the bow, his girlfriend used water from Nick's home water of the Saugatuck River (Connecticut) while head coach Mark Davis used water from the Potomac.
"Nick was gone far too soon, but with this new shell, a part of him will forever grace the waters of the Potomac," said senior David Lincoln. "The name on this boat will always remind future GW rowers that "it is all of us, or none of us," a quote that Nick lived by and preached to his teammates both on and off the water."
In its debut races under its new name - Nicholas Upton '17 - the Varsity 8 went on to win both of its races on Saturday at the GW Invitational, picking up wins over Holy Cross, FIT and MIT.
GW's Varsity 8 boat maintains a national ranking of No. 13 in the latest USRowing Coaches Poll.
