CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Sophomores Jake Ortiz and Miranda Simon completed the first day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Zone A Championships on Monday at host Virginia Tech.
In the first Zone appearance since diving was reinstated at GW, Ortiz placed 24th overall with a score of 262.45 on 1-meter, and Simon took 53rd with a score of 186.40 on 3-meter.
"Jake performed really well throughout the competition," said head diving coach Anthony Crowder. "He was in the running for a finals showing, but will have another opportunity tomorrow on 3-meter."
"Miranda did really well through her first three dives," said Crowder. "Today was a pretty good first day for a pair of first-time Zone qualifiers. We're looking forward to getting back on the boards tomorrow."
Both Ortiz and Simon will return on Tuesday for 3-meter and 1-meter competition, respectively. The top 18 performers in preliminaries will earn a spot in the final.
