WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's water polo team took a pair of victories on the first day of play at the GW Invitational at the Charles E. Smith Center on Friday. The Colonials first downed VMI before edging St. Francis (Pa.). Seniors Allyson Bakos and Brennan Marczewski were honored in a Senior Day ceremony before the nightcap.
GW returns to action on Saturday, taking on Mercyhurst at 9:30 a.m. before closing weekend play against Gannon at 7:30 p.m.
GW 19, VMI 14
The Colonials avenged a loss to the Keydets on the road last week led by dominating performances from Ally Jochim and Jacqueline Bywater, each tallying a team-best five goals. GW and VMI traded goals until the Colonials took a two-point advantage in the first quarter at 5-3. Bywater found the back of the net three times in just the first period to give GW a 6-4 lead at the break. Jochim opened the second with a goal and Maggie Ball widened the gap with two consecutive scores to put the Colonials ahead 9-5. GW continued to dominate, taking a 14-7 lead at the half.
Jochim returned from the intermission with GW's next three goals as the Colonials held a 17-10 advantage at the close of the third quarter. Goals by Kira Bruno and Bywater in the fourth frame gave the Colonials a 19-14 victory.

St. Francis scored first in the second, but Bywater quickly evened the score and Ball netted her first of the match to give the Colonials a 3-2 edge. Bywater then completed her hat trick to close the half, GW leading 4-3.
Bywater was responsible for GW's lone goal of the third on a penalty shot to again tie the score at 5-5 with one quarter remaining. Back-to-back goals from Bywater and Scarlett Hallahan gave GW a 7-5 lead to open the fourth, but St. Francis responded with two goals of its own. Bruno then struck for her first goal of the match before Bywater landed her final score of the night with just under a minute remaining to give the Colonials a 9-7 triumph.
