LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The George Washington women's water polo team opened the 2017 season at the Bison Invitational this past weekend, splitting four matches at Kinney Natatorium on the campus of Bucknell University.
The Colonials opened the season Friday night with a thorough, 22-11 victory over Mercyhurst, and moved to 2-0 the following morning by dispatching Gannon University, 12-5. GW then ran into a pair of ranked opponents, closing the weekend with a 16-6 defeat to No. 21 Harvard and a 14-4 loss to 11th-ranked Princeton.

Leading returning scorer Scarlett Hallahan picked up where she left off last year with a six-goal performance, while Jacqueline Bywater added five and defender Maggie Ball had a hat trick.
The Colonials never trailed in scoring the first two goals of the match and led 13-7 at the half, before turning it into a rout with a 5-3 third quarter and 4-1 fourth quarter. In the cage, sophomore Katherine Moeller recorded eight saves.

After allowing Gannon to strike first just 50 seconds into the game, GW responded with a 7-0 run to close the first half and would build a 9-1 lead before the Knights got on the scoreboard again.
Freshman Kira Bruno led the offensive attack with four goals, while classmate Ally Jochim added three. It was another pair of newcomers who did the work in the cage to limit Gannon to five goals, with Samantha Runyon and Geena Peyton recording five saves apiece.

The 21st-ranked Crimson struck for the first six goals of the game before Bywater got GW on the board, but the Colonials were unable to get closer than a four goal deficit in falling, 16-6. Jochim had another three goal game to lead the Colonials while Hallahan added two and in the cage, Runyon led the way with five saves.

No. 11 Princeton scored the game's first five goals and led 9-1 at the half. GW cut into the deficit with three fourth quarter goals but was unable to mount a serious rally in falling 14-4. Jochim, freshmen Kira Bruno and Emma Shaffer, and junior Erin McGeoy accounted for the goals.
