Men's Soccer Shuts Out Dayton
10/7/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
It was the second home Atlantic 10 shutout victory of the week for the Colonials, who improved to 5-5-2 and 2-1 in conference play.
Williams found the net in the final minute of the first half to give GW the lead before his header set up Drini Redzepi's insurance score in the 54th minute.
GW's defense did the rest, holding keeping Dayton (5-6-2, 2-1) scoreless. Thor Arne Höfs made three saves to record another clean sheet.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- 45th Minute -- GW grabbed the lead with 35 seconds left in the opening half. Dylan Lightbourn collected a long outlet pass from Brady O'Connor and turned into space where he found Williams streaking wide open down the left side. The freshman from Texas managed to thread a left-footed shot inside the far post for his first goal as a Colonial. (GW 1, Dayton 0)

- 54th Minute -- Redzepi scored his first collegiate goal in memorable fashion. The sophomore midfielder received a header from Williams near the penalty spot with his back to the goal. Rather than attempting to turn, he one-timed a shot back over his shoulder and into the top left corner of the net. Reese Moore was also credited with an assist on the play for serving a long ball into the box to Williams. (GW 2, Dayton 0)

NOTEWORTHY:
- Joshua Yurasits kept the game scoreless in the 28th minute. Dayton's Nick Hagenkord appeared to have an open net before the GW defender raced in and cleared the shot off the goal line.
- Höfs made his best save in the 36th minute. Dayton's Alvaro Navarro received a pass at the top of the six-yard box and turned to shoot, but Höfs was there to punch away his close-range try. The GW keeper has four clean sheets this season and 15 for his career. He's lowered his season goals against average to 1.47.
- Redzepi and Williams are now tied for fourth on GW's season scoring list with four points apiece. Both have a goal and two assists this fall.
- Dayton outshot GW, 12-11. The difference was the Colonials scored on two of their three shots on goal. Dayton goalkeeper Federico Barrios made one save.
- It was the first time GW produced multiple goals since its 3-1 win at Navy on Sept. 13. The Colonials had scored exactly once in their previous six games.
