WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's indoor track team split its squad and sent runners to two area meets on Saturday, and the Colonials responded by setting four new program records at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational at the Naval Academy. Several Colonials also posted personal bests at the George Mason Patriot Games.
GW runners also combined to account for 19 new personal records at the two meets.
The bulk of GW's success came at the Wesley A. Brown Invitational at the Naval Academy, where four program records were shattered.
Junior Ed Delavergne set a new school record in the 400m by 0.21 seconds, finishing in 52.09 for 12th place, to lead a quartet of Colonials setting new PRs. Junior Frank Delavergne followed in 15th place in 52.32, ahead of sophomore Justin Scott (16th, 52.35 PR) and freshman Evan Garry (21st, 52.97 PR).
Freshman Ira Clark put forth a record-setting performance in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 7.44 to beat the previous mark by 0.03 seconds. Clark also set a new record in the 200m where he broke his own record with a time of 23.87. Classmate Jared Nelson also posted a PR in the 200m in 24.29.
Also at the Wesley Brown Invitational - Delavergne, Delavergne, and freshmen Jakob Coombes and Evan Garry combined to set a new program record in the 4x400m relay, the third time this indoor season that GW has set a new mark. The quartet finished third overall in 3:28.33.
Freshman Colin Wills set a new personal record in the mile, finishing in 4:19.33 (7th place). Freshman Jack Conlon (8th, 4:32.30) and Jon Dooling (9th, 4:32.78) also competed in the event and set new personal records.
In the 3000m, junior Carter Day (5th, 8.29.77 PR), junior Charles Arnold (9th, 8:46.52 PR) and senior Jordan Pantalone (11th, 9:04.56 PR) all had career-best performances.
Over at George Mason's Patriot Games, both of GW's competitors in the 3000m set new personal records. Graduate student Anthony Ruiz finished in 9:09.30, followed by sophomore Connor James in 9:11.22.
Freshman Paul Housey's time of 4:36.26 in the mile was a new personal record, as was junior Joe Verghese's time of 24.80 in the 200m.
GW will be idle next weekend before returning to action on Feb. 11 at Liberty Ellis Invitational in Lynchburg, Virginia.
