WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's soccer team played NJIT to a 1-1 (2OT) draw on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (1-0-2) took an early lead in the first half, but NJIT (2-0-1) evened the score in the second.
Junior Oliver Curry put the Buff and Blue on top in the 13th minute after senior Garrett Heine dodged the NJIT keeper to shoot a cross to the left side of the box. Curry then placed the ball into the right side of the net to give GW a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials controlled the ball for much of the first half, holding NJIT without a shot until the 39th minute when a header went wide. Another shot by the Highlanders would go wide to close the half with GW in the lead.
NJIT came out aggressive in the second stanza, putting on the pressure in an already physical match.
Heine nearly increased GW's lead at the 65th-minute mark after a yellow card on NJIT set the senior up for a free kick at the top of the box. Heine sent a strong shot to the right side of the net, but a diving NJIT keeper tipped the ball away.
After being unsuccessful in their first four shots of the half, the Highlanders tied the match, 1-1, in the 83rd minute to send the game into overtime.
Neither squad was able to break the stalemate after two overtime periods.
The Colonials look to remain undefeated on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Loyola Maryland.
