BALTIMORE, Md. - The George Washington men's soccer squad fell to Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday evening, 2-0, at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Colonials (1-1-2) dropped their first match in 2016, as the Greyhounds (1-3-0) grabbed their first victory of the year.
The Greyhounds got on the board early, scoring in the fourth minute when Nico Brown beat the GW defense deep down the left wing. A cross to the back post was then one-touched by Brian Saramago into the back of the net to give Loyola (Md.) a 1-0 advantage.
Loyola had another chance in the 10th minute, but this time the Colonials' defense blocked the shot and ended the threat.
Junior Christian Lawal was responsible for GW's two shots in the first half with one hitting its mark, but the Greyhounds kept a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Colonials put the pressure on early in the second half, earning consecutive corner kicks in the 54th minute, but both plays were cleared away by the Greyhounds without damage.
GW had another chance in the 68th minute when senior Garrett Heine served the ball across the box on a set piece outside the top left corner, but the ball went just too deep for senior Ben Ogedegbe to play into the net.
Senior Sam Summerlin put on a stellar defensive display in the 71st minute, first sliding to deflect a cross into the box, then immediately regaining his footing to block a shot within seconds about 7 yards out.
Loyola (Md.) increased its lead in the 83rd minute when Brennan Goldsmith threaded the ball through several players to sneak the ball on the ground just inside the left post from distance.
The Colonials did not let up, as Angel Valencia issued a shot less than 30 seconds later that was saved by the Greyhounds' keeper. Despite increasing possession time in the second half, GW was not able to find the back of the net as Loyola (Md.) came out with the 2-0 win.
The Buff and Blue look to bounce back on Sunday when Navy visits the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 2 p.m. contest.
