WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team powered all three of its boats to either tie or outperform its seeding on the final day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Sunday morning on Mercer Lake.
GW placed 18th overall as a team in the Ten Eyck Award standings after an 18th-place finish by the Varsity 8, a 14th-place finish by the 2nd Varsity 8 and an 11th-place finish by the 3rd Varsity 8.
The Colonials also placed fifth overall in the Chapman Award standings, which is the team point trophy for the Most Improved Team in the nation from last season.
"Overall it was a really good regatta for the program," said head coach Mark Davis. "Our performance this weekend is showing the depth of the team with all three boats competing at a really high level."
The Varsity 8 placed sixth in the Third-Level Final with a time of 6:05.46 for a final national ranking of No. 18, a one-spot improvement on its seed. Cornell won the race in 5:51.21, followed by Dartmouth (5:57.41), Syracuse (5:59.15), FIT (5:59.33), Oregon State (6:04.49) and the Colonials.
"We didn't have great races every single time and that put us in some bad lanes for the finals," said Coach Davis. "Especially for the Varsity 8. They had a very good semifinal but because they didn't race great in their heat or their rep, they ended up in a bad lane today. And with a crosshead wind in the far lane - they had a tough go at it. But, they had a really good race this morning and I am happy with them and they are excited about where they are after moving up on their seed."
The 2nd Varsity 8 placed second in its Third-Level Final with a time of 6:05.37 to clinch 12th overall in the nation, outperforming its seed by three spots. The Colonials finished four seconds behind Dartmouth (6:01.50) and ahead of Syracuse (6:06.12), Navy (6:09.12), Oregon State (6:12.92), Drexel (6:13.26) and Hobart (6:17.80).
The 3rd Varsity 8 equaled its seeding and finished ranked 11th overall in the nation after a fifth-place finish in Sunday's Petite Final. The Colonials finished the course in 6:11.72, ahead of Dartmouth (6:14.94) and behind Wisconsin (5:59.83), Cornell (6:02.85), Yale (6:07.73) and Navy (6:08.99).
"We need to build off of this next year," said Coach Davis. "We only have five guys, four rowers and one coxswain, graduating out of the 27 people here. We are returning a lot of guys next year and we want to build off of this experience into the future. It won't mean anything unless we can build off of it and keep getting better. That is the program's goal."
