HENLEY-ON-THAMES - George Washington's B4 boat successfully qualified for the Visitors' Challenge Cup after finishing with a top-four time during trials on the Thames River on Friday in qualifying races of the 2016 Royal Henley Regatta.
Both of GW's boats now await the official draw for opening round opponents in the bracket-style tournament format.
"With a strong head current and head wind, the conditions were very slow today," said head coach Mark Davis. "The B4, with Jordan Tewksbury-Volpe, Bob Hobert, Hugh Tribe and Maddux Castle took one of the four qualifying spots today. The crew had a solid row but feel that their best racing is still ahead. Everyone is eager for the draw tomorrow to see who we will see in the first round on Thursday. This is a great start to the regatta for GW."
Also qualifying for the Visitors' Challenge Cup in Friday's time trials was Newcastle University (UK), Cambridge University and Goldie Boat Club (UK) and Nereus Rowing Club (Amsterdam).
The Visitors' Challenge Cup is for men's coxless fours and is open to male crews from all eligible rowing clubs in the world. A total of 24 crews will open racing with heats on June 29. The draw is expected to be announced on Saturday.
