WASHINGTON -- The George Washington women's water polo team dropped its first two CWPA contests of the season, falling to Brown and No. 21 Hartwick on Saturday afternoon at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
Sophomore Jacqueline Bywater paced the Colonials with eight goals and added three assists across the two games, while senior Scarlett Hallahan tallied five goals and five assists. Sophomore Erin McGeoy recorded a team-best eight ejections drawn and five steals on the day.
The first game of the day remained close for much of the first quarter, as senior Hannah Cox's goal at the 4:12 mark made it a one-goal contest, 4-3. Three straight Brown goals began to break the game open before Hallahan found the back of the cage with 19 seconds left in the period to make it 7-4 after one.
The Bears opened a five-goal lead midway through the second stanza before back-to-back markers by Bywater and McGeoy again pulled the Colonials within three, 10-7. Brown answered with two in a row, and Bywater made it 12-8 at the break with her fourth goal of the game with 35 seconds left.
Brown began the third with three of the first four goals of the frame and held a 16-10 advantage after three. GW outscored the Bears, 2-1, in the fourth quarter, with Bywater and sophomore Maddie Goodell each tallying goals, to account for the 17-12 final margin.
Bywater scored a game-high six goals against Brown, with five coming on power plays, while Hallahan tallied six points on two goals and four assists.
Senior Addy Colona and freshman Katherine Moeller split time in the cage, with each goalkeeper making a pair of stops in two quarters apiece.
Eight of GW's 12 goals against the Bears came on power plays, as the Colonials drew 12 ejections in the contest. McGeoy picked up a team-best five ejections drawn, while Bywater, Hallahan and freshman Anya Welch each had two.
Prior to the game, GW honored seniors Colona, Cox and Mikaela Pyrch in a Senior Day ceremony.
Hartwick scored the first three goals of the nightcap before Bywater put the Colonials on the board at the 3:14 mark. The Hawks led, 4-2, after one. The teams traded goals for the first half of the second period, with Hallahan scoring both markers for GW as the Colonials trailed by just two, 6-4, but Hartwick ended the quarter with four in a row for a 10-4 halftime advantage.
The Hawks extended their run with the first two goals of the third stanza before Cox and Bywater went back-to-back to make it 12-6 at the end of three. Each team scored five times in the fourth frame, including a pair by Pyrch, for the 17-11 final.
Hallahan notched a hat trick to lead the Colonials, while Pyrch, Bywater and Cox tallied two goals apiece and Goodell dished out three assists. Sophomore Maggie Ball had a goal, two assists and three steals and McGeoy recorded three steals and three ejections drawn.
Moeller stopped eight shots in the cage, while Colona recorded one save.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they host CWPA rival Bucknell at 10 a.m. at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool.
