ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The George Washington women's water polo team dropped a pair of matches to ranked opponents on the final day of the Wolverine Invite at Michigan's Canham Natatorium on Sunday afternoon, falling to No. 21 Long Beach State and No. 5 Michigan.
The Colonials (3-6) kept it close early against Long Beach, as sophomore Scarlett Hallahan tallied back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 with 2:52 remaining in the opening period. The Beach took the lead for good with the final two goals of the quarter for a 4-2 lead after one, then pulled away with a 5-0 second stanza for a 9-2 halftime advantage.
Senior Hannah Cox scored twice in the third quarter to take sole possession of second place on GW's all-time scoring list with 172 career goals, just three shy of former teammate Rachael Bentley's program record of 175.
LBSU, which scored three times in the third period, notched the only two goals of the final frame for the 14-4 victory.
Hallahan added an assist and three steals to her two goals, while Cox drew a pair of ejections. Freshman goalie Katherine Moeller recorded a career-high nine saves.
In the nightcap, the host Wolverines scored the first three goals of the game before Hallahan put the Colonials on the board at the 3:58 mark of the first quarter. Michigan scored three more times before the period ended for a 6-1 lead, then notched the only two goals of the second quarter for an 8-1 advantage at the break. Another 6-1 third quarter for Michigan included a goal by sophomore Maggie Ball, but the Wolverines capped their win with a 5-0 fourth.
Ball recorded three steals and a field block to go with her goal. Moeller stopped three shots and tallied a career-high four steals in the cage.
The Colonials head west this weekend for their annual spring break trip to California. GW opens the road swing at the Lancer Invite, with games against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Cal Lutheran on Friday.
