LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore Scarlett Hallahan and senior Hannah Cox scored five goals apiece to lead the George Washington women's water polo team to a 15-14 win over VMI on Tuesday evening at the Keydets' Clark King Pool.
Cox moved past Kira Canon ('04) into third place all-time at GW with 167 career goals, three behind Morgan Hooker ('07) in second place and eight shy of the Colonials' program record of 175, set by Cox's former teammate, Rachael Bentley, from 2011-14.
Hallahan added two assists for a game-high seven points and Cox had one helper to match a career high with six points against the Keydets. Sophomore Jacqueline Bywater notched her first hat trick of the season to go with an assist and three steals, and sophomore Maggie Ball scored a career-high five points on two goals and three helpers. Senior goalkeeper Addy Colona matched her career bests with eight saves and three steals in the cage.
GW (2-2) never trailed in the game and held a 4-2 edge after the opening quarter, and after VMI (2-3) scored the first goal of the second, the Colonials tallied three in a row and took an 8-4 lead at the break.
The Keydets opened the third period with a 5-1 surge to tie the game at 9-9, but GW responded with a 5-1 run of its own to regain its four-goal advantage, 14-10, at the end of the frame. VMI again rallied with three straight goals to start the fourth and pull within one, 14-13, but Cox sealed the win with her fifth goal of the game. VMI scored once more in the final minute, but the Colonials held on for the 15-14 victory.
Sophia DelBondio paced VMI with four goals, while Natalie Rivas and Rebecca Serrano each notched hat tricks.
The Colonials and Keydets meet again on Thursday at 5 p.m. in GW's home opener at the Charles E. Smith Center.
