LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Sophomore Scarlett Hallahan notched her second hat trick in as many games and sophomore Maddie Goodell matched her career high with five points but the George Washington women's water polo team dropped its Bison Invitational finale, 11-7, to VMI on Sunday morning at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium.
Hallahan added an assist, an ejection drawn and three steals to her trio of goals, while Goodell recorded two goals, three assists and a steal. Sophomore Maggie Ball and senior Addy Colona matched Hallahan for team-high honors with three steals, and Colona also recorded seven saves in the cage.
VMI jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Hallahan put GW (1-2) on the board at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter. The Keydets held a 5-2 advantage after one period. Back-to-back goals by sophomore Jacqueline Bywater and Ball pulled the Colonials within one, 5-4, with 3:39 to go before halftime, but VMI countered with the final two goals of the frame to take a 7-4 lead at the break.
The Keydets outscored GW, 3-1, in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 10-5. The Colonials scored two of the final three goals of the game, but it was not enough to avoid an 11-7 loss.
GW and VMI will rematch on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Lexington, Va.
