WASHINGTON - George Washington women's swimming and diving recent graduate Janica Lee ('15) has been named an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Each year, Diverse Magazine honors undergraduate student-athletes of color who best exemplify academic and athletic achievement. Eligible student-athletes must be active in their communities and maintain a grade-point average of 3.2 or higher.
Throughout her career, Lee consistently swam as one of GW's top performers and was named the squad's MVP during her senior year. In 2013, Lee was part of two school record-setting performances - the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, native ranks third all-time at GW in the 100-yard breaststroke, fourth in the 200-breast, and sixth in the 200-yard individual medley.
Outside of the pool, Lee demonstrated strong leadership qualities as GW's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) president and a participant in GW's Student-Athlete Leadership Academy. Lee also displayed commitment to her community by volunteering at a wide variety of events, including the Nation's Triathlon and creating Thanksgiving baskets for donation.
In the classroom, the pre-med student was named to the GW Athletics Academic Dean's List in each semester of her career and landed on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll in five semesters. Lee graduated in May with a 3.59 GPA.
