GW Women's Soccer Falls to Georgetown

WASHINGTON - Junior MacKenzie Cowley scored her fourth goal of the season, but George Washington women's soccer team fell to local rival Georgetown, 4-1, on Thursday afternoon at the Hoyas' Shaw Field.
The Colonials (2-3-0) held a 1-0 lead for most of the first half, before the Hoyas (4-2-0) tallied the final four goals over the last 50 minutes of play.
The Colonials struck early with a goal just 2:51 into the match. Redshirt-senior Nicole Belfonti headed the ball toward the center of the net off of a corner kick across the box from senior Brooke Stoller, and junior MacKenzie Cowley netted the ball with a touch of her right foot. The goal was Cowley's team-leading fourth on the season.
The Colonials played solid defense for the remainder of the half, fighting off five shots until Georgetown leveled the score in the 44th minute when Taylor Pak shot a laser from just outside the box into the top right corner of the net after a pass from Chloe Knott.
The Hoyas took the lead in the 54th minute when Grace Damaska reached the back of the net from the left side of the box after receiving the ball from Crystal Thomas 13 yards out.
Georgetown then added insurance with two goals in quick succession. The first came in the 62nd minute as Damaska offered the helper to Thomas, who netted the ball from six yards out. Just 1:15 later, Taylor Pak put the Hoyas up, 4-1, from inside the box after receiving a cross from the end line from Audra Ayotte.
The Colonials were outshot, 12-3, while redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Miranda Horn made four stops in a full 90 minutes of play for GW.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Sunday as they visit Delaware for a 3 p.m. match at Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
