NEWARK, Del. - The George Washington women's soccer squad dropped a 3-1 decision to Delaware on Sunday afternoon at the Blue Hens' Stuart & Suzanne Grant Stadium.
Delaware (5-3-0) struck first with a goal 17:19 into the contest by Natalie Zelenky from seven yards out off of a through ball in the air from Andrea Gunderson to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 advantage.
The Colonials (2-4-0) tied the match just 4:57 later as sophomore Brittany Cooper netted her first goal of the season after Delaware's keeper tipped the ball off of the crossbar and Cooper fired in the rebound from two yards out.
GW redshirt-sophomore goalie Miranda Horn posted a strong first half, thwarting five Delaware shots to keep the match tied, 1-1, at the break.
The Blue Hens took a 2-1 lead in the 46th minute with Zelenky's second goal of the day on a put-back shot on a ball off the post. Delaware then netted its final goal of the game in the 67th minute as Nikki Adams found the back of the net from eight yards out after a cross from Zelenky, who was credited with the helper.
Horn finished the game with a season-high six saves. The Colonials outshot the Blue Hens, 12-10, but could not overcome the deficit to put the final score at 3-1.
The Colonials return to the pitch on Thursday, Sept. 17, to open a two-game homestand when Liberty visits the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a 3 p.m. match.
