GW Men's Rowing Wraps Day 1 at IRA Nationals

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team competed in eight races during Friday's preliminary heats and repechages on day one of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Lake Mercer.
Saturday's semifinals races are now set. The Varsity 8, 2nd Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 will all compete in respective third/fourth level semifinals (10:48 a.m.) while the 3rd Varsity 8 advances to Sunday's third-level Final.
Conditions throughout racing on Friday were calm with a slight headwind.
The Varsity 8 opened the day with a fifth-place showing in its morning heat. The Colonials completed the 2,000-meter course in 6:14.61. Yale (5:52.244) and Brown (5:54.85) finished in first and second place, respectively, to advance to Saturday's semifinals. Penn finished in third in 6:04.10 ahead of Stanford (6:07.61) and sixth-place Syracuse (6:16.61).
The V8 returned to the water in the afternoon repechage and finished in 6:00.27 for fourth place.
The Varsity 8 will row in the third/fourth level semifinal on Saturday at 10:48 a.m. against Holy Cross, Dartmouth, Wisconsin, Syracuse and Oregon State. The top three boats will advance to Sunday's third-level final while the remaining boats will row in the fourth-level final.
The 2V8 took fifth place in its morning heat, finishing with a time of 6:28.84. Washington won in 5:56.95, followed by Cornell (6:00.42), Harvard (6:03.53) and Syracuse (6:25.36).
In its repechage, the 2V8 finished in 6:03.53 to take second place in a tightly contested race. Penn finished in first in 6:00.65, a boat length ahead of the Colonials. Drexel took third in 6:19.99, followed by Holy Cross (6:30.86).
GW's 2V8 will row in Saturday's third/fourth level semifinal at 11:12 a.m. against Holy Cross, FIT, Navy and Oregon State. The top three boats will advance to the third-level final on Sunday while the remaining boats will compete in the fourth-level final.
GW's Varsity 4 rallied from an open-water, last-place deficit to finish in fourth place in its morning heat. The Colonials finished in 7:00.83, just a fraction of second behind third-place Northeastern (7:00.29). Cornell won the heat in 6:50.31 while Drexel finished second in 6:56.43. UC Santa Clara finished fifth in 7:02.79.
The V4 finished in fifth place its afternoon repechage with a time of 7:39.33. The V4 will row in the third/fourth level semifinals on Saturday.
The 3V8 took fifth place in its morning heat in 6:28.84 before a third-place finish in its afternoon repechage. The Colonials tallied a time of 6:12.36 in the repechage, finishing behind first-place Boston University (6:03.00) and Navy (6:07.19) and ahead of Penn (6:18.37) and Drexel (6:35.03).
The 3V8 will row in Sunday's third-level final against Oregon State, Holy Cross, Hobart, Penn and Drexel at 9:36 a.m.
