PRINCETON, N.J. - The ninth-seeded George Washington women's water polo team fell to seventh-seeded Bucknell, 9-6, on Sunday morning at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool to take eighth place at the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship.
Bucknell scored the only two goals of the first quarter for a 2-0 lead, but the Colonials (14-17) quickly tied it early in the second as freshman Scarlett Hallahan and sophomore Brennan Marczewski went back-to-back. The teams then traded goals over the net three minutes, with freshman Jacqueline Bywater tallying a power play marker and a five-meter goal to make it 4-4 with 2:54 to go, but Bucknell's Taylor Barnett buried her second penalty goal of the game to give the Bison a 5-4 halftime advantage.
Bucknell opened a two-goal lead, 6-4, with the first goal of the third frame, but Hallahan tallied her second goal of the game to pull GW back within one, 6-5, with 7:07 to go in the period. The Bison, however, tallied the final two goals of the quarter for an 8-5 advantage after three. Sophomore Allyson Bakos scored a power play goal to open the fourth, but the Colonials would not score again and Barnett fired in her third five-meter goal of the game to round out the scoring and give Bucknell a 9-6 win.
Bywater and Hallahan each finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Bywater added two steals while Hallahan recorded three field blocks. Sophomore Maddy Johnson dished out three assists and added three steals and a pair of field blocks. Freshman Erin McGeoy drew six ejections and senior goalkeeper Chandler Vilander recorded five saves in her final game in cage.
Vilander finishes her four-year career second on GW's all-time list with 741 career saves, including a career-high 239 this season, which ranked sixth.
Bywater finished her freshman campaign as GW's single-season record holder for goals (82), assists (63), points (145) and steals (96). Hallahan, who finished just behind Bywater on GW's single-season list in both goals (81) and points (120), also broke Katherine Berry's single-season field blocks record with 19, while freshman Maggie Ball tied Berry with 18 on the year and finished fourth with 75 steals. In addition, McGeoy finished the year with 62 ejections drawn, a GW rookie record.
As a team, the Colonials broke program records for goals (320), steals (410) and field blocks (72) in a season.
