PHILADELPHIA - The George Washington men's rowing team opened its spring season with a pair of second-place finishes across four races at the Pennsylvania Invitational on Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River.
Conditions featured a slight headwind and good water.
The Third Varsity 8 and Second Varsity 8 each notched second-place finishes to pace the Colonials.
The 2V8 navigated the 2,000-meter course in 6:01.57 to claim second place. Penn finished in first in 5:54.70 while Drexel came in third in 6:15.90.
"The 2V had a very solid first half of the race and was beating Penn at the 800-meter mark," said Head Coach Mark Davis. "Penn pushed us in the middle and we weren't able to respond. It was nice to beat Drexel in that race considering they beat us in the 2V last year."
The 3V8 finished in 6:09.60 to take second place behind Penn (6:00.50) and ahead of Drexel (6:15.90).
In the Varsity 8 race and the McCausland Cup against Penn, the Colonials finished 5:55.10 for third place. Penn won the cup for the fifth straight season with a first-place finish in 5:46.70 while Drexel took second place in 5:50.20.
"The Varsity 8 is a really young boat with five sophomores, two juniors and one senior and our youth kind of showed today," said Coach Davis. "The result is discouraging, but it is very early in the season and we have a long way to go with a lot of work to do."
The Freshman 8 finished in 6:06.60, just two seconds behind second-place Drexel (6:08.60). Penn won in 5:55.00.
GW returns to action on April 4 against Harvard and Cornell in Boston, Massachusetts.
