BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - George Washington women's water polo freshman Scarlett Hallahan was named CWPA Division I/II Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, and freshman Maggie Ball was tabbed the league's Defensive Player of the Week, the Collegiate Water Polo Association announced on Wednesday. The awards cover games played March 9-15.
Hallahan posted team highs of 12 goals and seven assists and added five steals, two ejections drawn and a field block as the Colonials (10-9) went 3-1 over their final four games in California.
The San Diego native notched a hat trick and added an assist for four points in GW's 15-6 victory over Redlands, then tallied four goals and two helpers at Cal Baptist. Hallahan finished the week with another six points (4g, 2a) in GW's 11-8 win over Connecticut College and four points (2g, 2a) and four steals in a 13-9 victory at Cal Lutheran.
Hallahan, who is second on the team in goals (56) and third in assists (26) this season, was also named CWPA Rookie of the Week on March 4. GW freshmen have now been named Rookie of the Week five weeks in a row to start the season, as Jacqueline Bywater was recognized last week as well as for the first two weeks of the season. The duo is one shy of the 2013 team's six Rookie of the Week accolades between Hannah Cox and Erin Donoghue.
Ball tallied a team-high 19 steals and three field blocks to pace GW's defense, which allowed just 9.5 goals per game over the four contests.
The native of Saratoga, California, had five steals at Cal Baptist and six against Connecticut College before finishing the week by matching GW's single-game record with eight steals at Cal Lutheran.
For the season, Ball ranks second on the team with 55 steals, and her 13 field blocks are the third-highest single-season total in program history. She earns her first career weekly award and is the first Colonial to be named Defensive Player of the Week since Katherine Berry on March 12, 2013.
