LEWISBURG, Pa. - The George Washington women's water polo team opened CWPA league action with losses to Hartwick and Bucknell on Saturday at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium. The Colonials fell to the Hawks, 14-9, before dropping an 11-4 decision to the host Bison.
GW (4-5, 0-2 CWPA) and Hartwick traded goals in the first quarter and the score was tied, 3-3, after eight minutes, but the Hawks, who are receiving votes in the most recent national poll, outscored the Colonials, 4-1, in the second period for a 7-4 halftime lead.
After Hartwick scored the first goal of the third frame, GW used a 3-1 run to pull within two, 9-7, with 3:13 to go in the period, but the Hawks scored the final two goals of the quarter for an 11-7 advantage. The teams again alternated goals in the fourth for the 14-9 final score.

Sophomore Maddy Johnson recorded a career-high six steals and freshman Jacqueline Bywater had four as the Colonials tallied 23 takeaways in the game, the third-highest single-game total in program history.

Bucknell led GW, 3-2, after one quarter and scored the only goal of the second to take a 4-2 halftime advantage. The Bison then outscored the Colonials, 4-0, in the third period to go up 8-2 and extended their run to six in a row before Johnson found the back of the net with 5:02 left in the fourth to make it 10-3. Each team scored once more for the 11-4 final.
Johnson tallied two of GW's four goals while senior Mikaela Pyrch and junior Hannah Cox each scored once. Ball recorded a team-high five steals and Vilander made 10 saves in the cage.
