RICHMOND, Va. - GW men's basketball trimmed an 11-point second-half deficit to 46-44 with 5:56 to play, but Richmond held on to defeat the Colonials, 56-48, at the Robins Center on Saturday night.
Juniors Kethan Savage and Kevin Larsen combined for 34 points for GW (17-10, 7-7 A-10), which lost its fourth straight game to drop into eighth place in the Atlantic 10 standings, a half-game ahead of St. Bonaventure (13-11, 6-7) going into Wednesday's tilt against the Bonnies at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Savage finished with 18 points, one shy of his season-high, in 27 minutes off the bench, while Larsen added 16 points. The duo combined to make 12-of-21 shots and scored 19 of GW's 23 second-half points, including 14 during a 16-7 surge that turned a 39-28 hole with 12:57 left into a one-possession game at 46-44 with 5:56 to play.
T.J. Cline, who led Richmond (15-12, 8-6 A-10) with 16 points, four 3-pointers and four steals, answered 23 seconds later to give the Spiders a four-point cushion, 48-44, with 5:33 remaining.
The Colonials had six chances to again make it a one-possession contest, but committed two of their 14 turnovers and made just 1-of-6 shots over the final five minutes as the Spiders avenged a double-overtime 73-70 loss in the district on Jan. 15. The defeat is just GW's second in its last six meetings against UR.
Senior John Kopriva posted career-highs of nine rebounds and four blocks along with his four points.
ShawnDre' Jones netted 14 points off the bench and Terry Allen amassed 12 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Richmond. Leading scorer Kendall Anthony was limited to nine points, nearly eight below his average, on 4-of-16 shooting.
Wednesday's 7 p.m. contest against St. Bonaventure will be televised by American Sports Network and streamed for free in HD on RaiseHigh Live.
