WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool on Saturday as the Colonials host Richmond at the Charles E. Smith Center Pool for an 11 a.m. contest. The meet will mark the squad's final contest of the fall semester before returning to competition in January.
The Colonials enter the weekend after a strong showing at the Magnus Cup Invitational from Nov. 20-22, at Cleveland State, placing fourth in the 10-team meet.
Freshman Emily Zhang snapped the program record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:02.83, besting the previous mark of 2:04.66 and grabbing first place in the event. In the same race, Junior Lauren Law also finished better than the previous school record, touching the wall in 2:04.18. Zhang sits atop the Atlantic 10 in the 200-yard IM heading into the weekend.
Later in the meet, Law and Zhang switched roles, as Law set a new program record in the 400-yard IM (4:22.11), while Zhang's time of 4:26.46 also bested the previous top mark of 4:28.49.
Rookie Lucy Castro grabbed a race victory for the Colonials in the 1,650-yard freestyle, as her time of 17:10.21 placed her seventh on GW's all-time list. Castro ranks second in A-10 in the mile swim.
A perennial Atlantic 10 powerhouse, Richmond has claimed the conference crown in 13 of the last 14 seasons, including the last five years in a row. The Spiders returned 2015 A-10 Most Outstanding Diving Performer Irina Chiulli and Most Outstanding Rookie Performer Annie Lane this season.
"We face a big challenge this weekend in welcoming the defending A-10 champion, and conference dynasty program Richmond," said head coach James Winchester. "This will be a good opportunity for our ladies to test themselves against the best, and for us as a program to see what we need to, as we aspire to be at that championship level. It should be a good meet, and I expect our ladies to step up to the competition."
The 16 event meet will feature both swimming and diving events, as the Colonials compete at home for the second time this season.
