BALTIMORE - The George Washington women's swimming and diving team fell at UMBC, 138.5 - 120.5, on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Aquatic Complex.
Freshman Emily Zhang grabbed one race victory and posted a pair of second-place finishes to lead the Colonials, while rookie Miranda Simon and junior Lauren Law each posted a pair of second-place finishes on the day.
Zhang posted second-place finishes in the 100-yd and 200-yd breaststroke before winning the 200-yd individual medley with a time of 2:06.67 - good for seventh on GW's all-time list.
"I'm very happy with Emily Zhang's performance in the 200-yd IM today, and we had some great leadership out of Lauren," said first-year head coach James Winchester. "We also had some exceptional performances on the diving board, with Miranda taking a couple of second places in her first collegiate meet and Iman Lee having some great performances as well."
Coming off of a strong performance at Howard, Law touched the wall second in the 100-yd and 200-yd butterfly events, followed by a third-place finish in the 200-yd IM.
Rookie Lucy Castro posted strong performances in the distance freestyles, placing second in the 1,000-yd free and third in the 500-yd event.
In her first collegiate meet, Simon took to the boards and placed second in the 1-meter (230.55) and 3-meter (224.02) events. Sophomore Iman Lee took third in the 1-meter with a score of 180.45 to begin her 2015-16 season.
"Our team knew we were going to come up to an exceptionally hard challenge today against a very strong UMBC program," said Head Coach Winchester. "But I was really proud of how we handled it. We raced really well and had some great improvements from last week."
The Colonials return to action on Nov. 7, as GW hosts Towson in the 2015-16 home opener at the Charles E. Smith Center pool.
