WASHINGTON - Sophomore Tobi Adewole scored his first goal of the season but the George Washington men's soccer team fell to Saint Francis, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Saint Francis (4-3-0) got on the board first when Andrew Hajec slid the ball into the bottom left corner from the right side of the box in the eighth minute. Pablo Medina and Ryan Byers were each credited with assists on the goal.
GW (3-2-0) was fouled and awarded a free kick just over seven minutes later. Senior Andri Alexandersson, the hero in the Colonials' double overtime win over Navy on Tuesday night, took the kick from 20 yards out. Similar to his game-winner against the Midshipmen, the shot hit off the crossbar and bounced down, but this time it caromed back into the field, and Adewole was there to finish it off with a header, tying the game in the 16th minute.
The score remained knotted at 1-1 at halftime, but the Red Flash were awarded a penalty kick early in the second half, which Francis Devries sent into the lower right corner to give the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute, and the Colonials were not able to find the equalizer in the 2-1 loss.
Saint Francis outshot GW, 14-6, and held a 12-2 advantage on corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe stopped four shots for the Colonials, while Red Flash goalie Ander Garcia did not record a save.
The Colonials return to action on Tuesday when they visit Virginia Tech for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
