
GW Men's Soccer Falls at Virginia Tech, 1-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The George Washington men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Virginia Tech on Tuesday evening at the Hokies' Thompson Field.
GW (3-3-0) outshot the Hokies, 17-15, but put just four goals on target. Junior Ross Higgins led the Colonials with three shots in the game.
After a scoreless first half in which the Colonials held an 8-4 shot advantage, Virginia Tech (5-3-0) broke the tie early in the second. Som Essome played the ball across to Ricardo John, who put the ball away for a 1-0 Hokies lead in the 49th minute.
GW took seven of the game's next nine shots over a 20-minute span, but was unable to find the equalizer.
Junior goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe made seven saves, while GW defenders were credited with two more. Virginia Tech keeper Ben Lundgaard stopped four shots for the Hokies.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday when they host Saint Peter's at 1 p.m. at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
