SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Freshmen 8 won its repechage race to clinch a spot in the semifinals as the George Washington men's rowing team opened racing at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships on Friday on Lake Natoma.
The Freshmen 8 finished in sixth place in its morning heat, but rebounded in a thrilling repechage race to clinch one of three available spots in Saturday's semifinal.
The Colonials' rookies were in second place at the 1,500-meter mark and fell all the way to fourth place at the midway point before rallying in the final 1,000 meters. GW navigated the course in 6:18.70, passing the field and edging Dartmouth (6:19.29), Drexel (6:19.79) and Boston University (6:21.20) at the finish line.
The Freshmen 8 needs a top-three finish in Saturday's semifinals to advance to Sunday's Grand Final.
GW's Varsity 8 finished in sixth place in its morning heat before a third-place showing in its repechage. The varsity crew will return to the water on Saturday morning in the C/D semifinals. The Colonials results on Saturday will determine placement in the third-level or fourth-level finals.
The Varsity 4 finished in sixth place in its morning heat and will race in the second or third semifinal on Saturday.
Racing resumes at 8:00 a.m. PT on Saturday. A complete schedule for Saturday's racing is available here.
