WASHINGTON - The George Washington men's rowing team has three boats entered in this weekend's Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships, hosted by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
GW will race a Varsity 8, Varsity 4 and Freshman 8 in the 111th installment of the prestigious event. The IRA National Championships features the top crews in the country and crowns the winner of the Varsity 8 Grand Final as the National Champion.
"We have had a very good week of practice," said Head Coach Mark Davis. "Both of our eights have different lineups from what we raced at Eastern Sprints and we feel that all of our crews are running faster. The guys are excited to race against the best programs in the country. We hope to make the GW community proud."
Racing begins with Friday morning's heats with repechages following in the afternoon. Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday and the grand, petite, third-level and fourth-level (Varsity 8 only) finals on Sunday.
The top two boats in the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 heats automatically advance to Saturday's semifinals, while the remaining crews row in Friday afternoon's repechage. In the Freshmen 8 heats, the top three finishers advance to the semifinals with the remaining boats going to the repechage.
Joining GW in the 23-crew Varsity 8 field are Boston University, Brown, California, Holy Cross, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Drexel, Florida Institute of Technology, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Harvard, Navy, Northeastern, Oregon State, Penn, Princeton, UC San Diego, Stanford, Washington, Wisconsin and Yale.
In Friday's heats, the Varsity 8 will row against Holy Cross, Wisconsin, Stanford, Northeastern and Pennsylvania. The Varsity 4 will face Oregon State, Brown, California, Georgetown and Wisconsin. The Freshmen 8 will race Dartmouth, Penn, Washington and Wisconsin.
Last season, the Colonials had their Varsity 8 and Freshmen 8 both row in the Third Level Finals. The varsity crew finished in fourth place while the Freshmen 8 took sixth place.
