GW Men's Rowing Competes at Eastern Sprints

WORCESTER, Mass. - The George Washington men's rowing team competed in its conference championships on Sunday at the Eastern Association of Rowing Colleges (EARC) Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
"It was a competitive day of racing against some of the top crews in the nation," said head coach Mark Davis. "We still have plenty of speed to gain as we turn our attention to the IRA National Championship."
Conditions in the morning were flat and fair with a slight headwind. In the afternoon, conditions remained fair with a slight cross headwind.
GW sent its Varsity 8 to the third-level final while the Freshmen 8 rowed in the Petite Final.
In the Varsity 8 morning heat, the Colonials finished in sixth place, navigating the 2,000-meter course in 6:27.24. GW was engaged in a furious sprint to the finish against Holy Cross, who edged the Colonials by just two-tenths of a second in 6:27.06. Brown won the heat in 6:03.36, followed by Princeton (6:05.77), Navy (6:14.51), Penn (6:22.89), Holy Cross and GW.
In the afternoon's third-level final, the Colonials varsity crew took fourth place in 6:35.94. Dartmouth won the race in 6:19.23 with Columbia following in 6:23.65. Holy Cross finished ahead of the Colonials again in 6:25.84 while Rutgers took fifth in 6:41.61, followed by MIT (6:49.36).
The Freshmen 8 finished in fourth place in its morning heat, finishing the course in 6:34.74. Harvard was the winner in 6:14.63, followed by Cornell (6:16.40) and Navy (6:25.65). The loss snapped the Freshmen 8's streak of seven consecutive victories.
In the Petite Final, the Colonials' crew of freshmen competed in dual race against Boston University. The Terriers were victorious in 6:29.10, followed by the Colonials in 6:40.30.
GW also raced a V4 in the morning's 3V4 Grand Final. The boat, consisting of seniors Eric Herrera, Adam Bair, Peter Joyce and Sean Fago, in addition to junior coxswain William Parsons, finished in second place in the three-boat field. Penn won the final in 7:00.50. The Colonials finished in 7:15.50, ahead of MIT (7:28.28).
The Colonials head west to Sacramento, Calif., for the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship, May 31-June 1 on Lake Natoma. As of press time, GW has a Varsity 8, Varsity 4, Freshmen 8 and Open 4 entered in the two-day event.
