CAMDEN, N.J. - The George Washington men's rowing team opened its 2012 spring race schedule on Friday afternoon on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
The Colonials raced three boats against Northeastern, falling in the Varsity 8, JV 8 and Freshman 8.
"There was a strong headwind today which makes for some long, tough racing," said Head Coach Mark Davis. "Each crew had some good moments, but there is a lot to improve on, which is typical of the first race of the season."
The Colonials Freshman 8 hit the water first and navigated the Cooper River in 6:47.6, about 32 seconds behind Northeastern's novice crew.
GW's JV 8 cut the deficit but still trailed Northeastern by about 22 seconds. The Huskies finished in 6:29.8 while the Colonials followed in 6:52.2.
In the Varsity 8, the Colonials finished in 6:31, 16 seconds behind Northeastern's top crew (6:14.7).
"Northeastern is one of the top programs in the country," said Coach Davis. "They are extremely fast and talented so it was great to line-up against them and see where we stand against a premier program."
The Colonials will face Georgetown (9:10 am) and Penn (1:00 pm) on Saturday on the Cooper River.
"Today is definitely a day that we can build on heading into tomorrow's races against Georgetown and Penn."
