INDIANAPOLIS - The George Washington men's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss to Atlantic 10 newcomer Butler on Friday evening at the Butler Bowl.
The Bulldogs (5-6-5, 3-3-1 A-10) outshot the Colonials, 20-9, for the game, as GW (5-11-0, 2-5-0 A-10) managed just three attempts on goal. Junior Tyler Ranalli took a team-high two shots for the Colonials, including one on target.
Jordan Burt gave Butler an early advantage at the 27:21 mark. He caught a deflected shot off the foot of teammate Blake Leyden and knocked it in from eight yards out. Butler stretched the lead to 2-0 less than three minutes before halftime, as Jeff Adkins' corner kick was deflected by Zach Steinberger to Justin Sass, who put the ball in the net at the 42:14 mark.
Shortly after halftime, Adam Glanzer sent a crossing pass to Steinberger, who buried his shot from 25 yards out to put the Bulldogs on top, 3-0, and Adkins tallied Butler's final goal in the 54th minute on a penalty kick.
GW redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jean-Pierre van der Merwe recorded four saves, while Butler goalies Jon Dawson and Andy Holte combined to stop three shots.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday, when they visit No. 20 Saint Louis in an Atlantic 10 contest at 3 p.m. ET.
