BLOOMINGTON, IN - Despite junior Megan Walker's opening goal 45 seconds into the game, the George Washington women's water polo team couldn't keep pace with top seeded and nationally ranked No. 6 Michigan in an 18-4 loss in the CWPA Eastern Championship quarterfinals at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center late Friday.
GW (7-18) falls into the consolation bracket where it will face fifth seeded Princeton at 1:20 pm Saturday for the right to play in Sunday's fifth-place game at 12:00 pm. The loser will play in the seventh-place game at 10:30 am. UM (31-4) advances to the Eastern semifinals for the 10th consecutive season.
Senior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou turned away 16 shots, but the high-powered Michigan offense used a five-goal run after Walker's opening goal to lead 5-1 after the first quarter, then netted six unanswered goals in the third period to open a 14-3 advantage.
GW benefited from UM's 15 kick-outs, but struggled to take advantage of the man-up opportunities, converting just three of the chances. The Wolverines countered with 6-of-8 conversions on the power play.
Junior Monica Hanson and freshmen Rachael Bentley and Allison Littlejohn also tallied goals for the Colonials. Sarah Robert led all players with four goals for Michigan, while Alex Adamson and Morgan Turner split time in cage and combined for nine saves.
