BRIDGEPORT, PA - The George Washington women's water polo team earned the No. 8 seed and will face ninth-seeded Mercyhurst at 9:00 am in the opening game of the 2011 CWPA Eastern Championship at Indiana's Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center April 29.
GW (6-17, 0-4 CWPA Southern Division) received the eighth slot in the 11-team tournament ahead of Mercyhurst, Bucknell and Gannon. The Colonials defeated the Lakers, 12-4, at home, and beat the Bison twice earlier this season.
The winner of the GW/Mercyhurst game moves on to face top-seeded and No. 6 Michigan, the three-time defending Eastern Champion, Friday at 4:30 pm, while the loser will face the loser of Harvard/Gannon Saturday at 6:40 pm. The event concludes on Sunday with placement games.
It will mark GW's seventh appearance at the Eastern Championship, first since 2005. By the new CWPA format, all 11 teams from the CWPA Southern and Western Divisions qualify for this year's Eastern Championship.
The winner of the Eastern Championship advances to the 2011 NCAA Championship, held at Michigan's Donald B. Canham Natatorium May 13-15.
Ticket prices for all spectators are $15 per day or $25 for the tournament (kids under 12 are free).
