BRIDGEPORT, PA - George Washington women's water polo junior center Megan Walker earned her first Southern Division Player of the Week award, while freshman attack Rachael Bentley claimed her second Rookie of the Week honor, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announced Wednesday.
Walker totaled seven goals, including a career-high five in an 11-9 victory over Bucknell, to help GW split its two games in Lewisburg, PA, on Sunday. Walker opened with two goals and two ejections drawn against No. 6 Michigan, then converted 5-of-8 shots and added three steals, two ejections drawn and two five-meter penalties drawn against the Bison. With her four ejections drawn, Walker climbed to third on GW's career list with 111.
Bentley totaled four goals and team-leading eight assists and five ejections drawn in the two games, highlighted by a two-goal, six-assist effort in the 11-9 victory over the Bison. Bentley converted her two shot attempts, handed out two assists and drew a pair of ejections in a 15-5 loss to No. 6 Michigan, then exploded for eight points and three ejections drawn against the Bison. Bentley is second on the team in points (46) and assists (22) this spring.
Walker's award marks the fifth time GW has claimed the Southern Division Player of the Week honor this season, with junior Allison Peotter claiming it four previous times. Along with senior Charlotte Schou's two Defensive Player of the Week honors, the Colonials have racked up nine weekly honors this spring.
Freshman Allison Littlejohn was recognized on the CWPA Southern Division Defensive Player of the Week Honor Roll after she recorded a team-best five steals in the loss to the Wolverines. She also added a goal in the victory over Bucknell.
GW (6-13, 0-1 CWPA Southern Division) concludes the regular season with four key games this weekend. The Colonials head to College Park, MD, Friday and Saturday for Southern Division contests against Maryland, Harvard and Brown.
GW then hosts nationally ranked No. 12 Indiana at Charles E. Smith Center Pool Sunday at 1:30 pm. The Colonials will recognize seniors Schou, Erin Delker and Melissa Sesana prior to their final home game, as well as hold a non-perishable food drive to support the Ronald McDonald House of Northeast DC.
