WASHINGTON, DC - Junior center Megan Walker controlled the middle with five goals and senior goalkeeper Charlotte Schou shined in goal with 18 saves to lift the George Washington women's water polo team to a 12-4 rout of Mercyhurst at the Colonials Invite at Charles E. Smith Center Pool Sunday.
With the victory, GW (5-12) finishes the Colonials Invite with a 2-1 record after splitting Saturday's games against Siena (L, 13-11) and Villanova (W, 13-5).
Walker and junior Allison Peotter set up each other's goals in the opening four minutes, but consecutive man-up goals from Mercyhurst's Laura Perez kept the Colonials and Lakers even at 2-2 through five minutes of play.
Freshman Allison Littlejohn converted a man-up goal with 1:41 left in the first quarter to make it 3-2 and give GW the lead for good. Walker drew a penalty just 22 seconds into the second quarter and buried the five-meter shot to make it 4-2, then scored 1:13 into the period for a 5-2 cushion.
The Colonials took a 7-2 lead into halftime and extended the run to eight consecutive goals after Peotter scored on a long outlet pass from Schou to push the margin to 10-2 with 4:58 left in the third quarter.
Mercyhurst (9-7), which received a vote in this week's CWPA Varsity Top 20, wouldn't get any closer than seven the rest of the way as Schou made 11 second-half saves, including eight in the fourth quarter and nine on MC's nine man-up opportunities, to help GW cruise to victory against its CWPA Western Division foe. Schou climbed to a tie for second all-time at GW with 702 career saves, 29 shy of Julie Jacoby's career mark of 738.
Walker finished with six points on five goals and an assist and added a team-high three ejections drawn. Peotter, who scored three goals, moved within an assist of Jenna Burnett's career mark of 99 with two helpers. With two steals, Peotter also became GW's career steals leader with 170, passing Elizabeth Schweitzer and Kira Canon.
GW travels to Lewisburg, PA, on April 10 for a Top 10 showdown with No. 7 nationally ranked Michigan and a battle against the host Bucknell Bison.
